Healthie vs. 5 Competitors: Which Platform Fits Your Practice or Your Build?

Arun Badole
VP of Engineering, Mindbowser

TL;DR

  • Healthie is the only platform in the nutrition/behavioral health/coaching space with a full API developer layer (Healthie Embedded) every other platform in this comparison is a closed SaaS system.
  • SimplePractice wins for solo therapists. Practice Better wins for solo nutrition coaches.
  • Healthie wins when you need group scale, insurance billing, or custom workflow development on top of your EHR.
  • If you’re building a digital health product (not just running a practice), Healthie is in a different category from every competitor here  it’s infrastructure, not just software.

Every time I’m on a call with a behavioral health or nutrition startup evaluating their stack, they compare Healthie to SimplePractice or Practice Better. Those comparisons miss the thing that matters most: Healthie Embedded. I’ve integrated enough of these platforms to tell you which one wins for which buyer and which comparison articles skip the part that actually matters.

Reader signal: If you’re choosing an EHR to run your practice, sections 2-6 are for you. If you’re building a digital health product and need infrastructure to build on, jump to section 7. Healthie is the only platform where both questions have the same answer.

I. What Is Healthie and the One Thing That Sets It Apart

Architecture diagram comparing Healthie’s embedded platform with traditional closed SaaS systems.
Fig 2: Healthie Embedded Architecture

Before comparing platforms, there’s one architectural fact that changes the entire comparison.

Healthie runs 47,000+ providers across nutrition, dietetics, health coaching, behavioral health, integrative medicine, group practices, and telehealth-first clinics. But the stat that matters for this comparison isn’t the provider count. It’s this:

Healthie Embedded is a white-label, API-first developer layer that lets digital health companies build their own branded patient-facing apps on Healthie’s infrastructure. The clinical data model, scheduling engine, billing, and telehealth all run on Healthie. Your product experience layers on top. The API is GraphQL. HIPAA-compliant. BAA available.

No other platform in this comparison set has an equivalent developer tier. SimplePractice, Practice Better, Jane, Cerbo, and TherapyNotes are all closed SaaS systems. If you want to build something custom a branded patient app, automated care workflows, a lab integration you’re looking at middleware hacks or a platform migration.

One hard stop: Healthie is NOT ONC-certified. If your practice needs ONC-certified EHR technology for Medicare incentive program compliance, Healthie is not the right fit. The ONC-certified options in the developer/headless tier are Medplum (CHPL #11745) and Canvas Medical.

II. Healthie vs. Practice Better

Practice Better is Healthie’s most direct competitor for nutrition and wellness coaches. Same audience, different philosophy.

Practice Better runs 10,000+ nutrition and wellness practitioners through a cleaner solo UX at a lower entry price (~$59/month vs Healthie’s ~$99/month verify current pricing before committing). Its food logging and meal plan template tooling is genuinely better out of the box than Healthie’s. If you’re a solo nutritionist in your first year of practice and your primary workflow is tracking client food logs and building meal plans, Practice Better is the easier and cheaper choice.

Here’s where the comparison flips. Practice Better has no API layer for custom development. You use it as-is. If you want to build a branded patient app, automate a lab-result-to-care-plan workflow, integrate with wearables, or build any custom patient-facing tooling on top of your EHR Practice Better is a closed door.

Healthie has more clinical depth for group practice management. Real SOAP notes vs Practice Better’s forms-based charting. Insurance billing built in. Multi-user practice management tools that work when you have 3+ providers.

  • Practice Better wins when: solo nutritionist, simple workflows, first year of practice, price-sensitive, no plans to build anything custom on top.
  • Healthie wins when: group practice, insurance billing needed, custom intake or care plan workflows required, planning to build patient-facing tools.

III. Healthie vs. SimplePractice

SimplePractice is the dominant force in behavioral health and therapy EHR. 180,000+ providers.

Its UI is the cleanest in the behavioral health EHR category. Billing automation handles complex out-of-network insurance scenarios better than most competitors. Wiley treatment planners are built in. Notes workflows are designed specifically for therapy and counseling. KLAS Research named it in its 2024 behavioral health EHR segment practitioner satisfaction scores drive that recognition.

It is also a completely closed system. No developer API. No white-label option. No way to build custom workflows, patient-facing tools, or integrations beyond what SimplePractice ships.

  • SimplePractice wins when: solo or small behavioral health practice, pure therapy workflow, Wiley treatment planners needed, heavy out-of-network billing, no nutrition or coaching workflows, no plans to build custom tooling.
  • Healthie wins when: multi-disciplinary practice (nutrition and therapy together), developer API needed, building a patient-facing app on top of your EHR, platform needs to handle behavioral health and nutrition/coaching both.

IV. Healthie vs. Jane App

Jane is the platform that consistently wins in multidisciplinary wellness clinics particularly outside the US.

Its strength is breadth. Chiropractic, physiotherapy, massage therapy, acupuncture, mental health, nutrition: Jane handles all of them in a single platform with scheduling, multi-disciplinary intake forms, and group booking. If you’re running a Canadian or Australian clinic with 4-5 different modalities, Jane is the cleanest implementation.

Jane has a basic API, but it’s not a developer-grade embedded platform. No equivalent to Healthie Embedded for white-label patient experiences.

US insurance billing is where Jane shows its geographic roots. Practices with complex US insurance billing consistently find Jane weaker than Healthie or SimplePractice.

  • Jane wins when: a Canadian or Australian clinic, a multi-disciplinary team, international markets, and not relying on complex US insurance billing.
  • Healthie wins when: US-based practice, complex US insurance billing required, API needed, nutrition and behavioral health combined.

V. Healthie vs. Cerbo (Functional and Integrative Medicine)

Cerbo is a niche but well-regarded EHR purpose-built for functional and integrative medicine practitioners.

What Cerbo does specifically well: root-cause-oriented clinical workflows, lab ordering and tracking built to functional medicine standards, supplement inventory management, long-form intake processes designed for IFM patient history. If you’re running a functional medicine practice that spends 90 minutes on intake, orders functional lab panels, and tracks supplement protocols Cerbo’s workflows align with how you actually practice.

Cerbo has no developer API for custom builds.

  • Cerbo wins when: pure functional medicine practice, IFM-aligned clinical workflows are the core requirement, heavy supplement and lab tracking is the primary daily workflow.
  • Healthie wins when: a functional medicine practice that also incorporates nutrition coaching or health coaching, API access is needed, and broader patient engagement tooling is needed.

VI. Healthie vs. TherapyNotes and TherapyBrands

Comparison scorecard evaluating mental health EHR platforms across key features and capabilities.
Fig 3: Mental Health EHR Comparison Scorecard

TherapyNotes is one of the leading behavioral health EHR platforms for group practices. The TherapyBrands acquisition rollup (multiple acquisitions, 2023-2025, per Healthcare IT News and vendor public announcements) has consolidated several behavioral health EHR products under one umbrella this is the consolidation story in behavioral health EHR right now.

TherapyNotes’ core strength is behavioral health group practice billing. Claims management designed for mental health insurance workflows how practices actually submit and follow up. Multi-provider mental health clinics consistently rate it highly for this specific function.

No developer API or white-label layer exists in TherapyNotes or the broader TherapyBrands portfolio.

  • TherapyNotes wins when: mental health group practice, behavioral health insurance billing is the primary operational complexity, no plans to build custom workflows.
  • Healthie wins when: a multi-disciplinary practice combining nutrition, coaching, and behavioral health, a developer API is needed, single platform for all three specialties.

IX. When You Choose Healthie and Want to Build on It

11-week timeline showing milestones from Healthie Embedded setup to production MVP launch.
Fig 5: Healthie MVP Build Timeline

Healthie handles the infrastructure layer: scheduling, telehealth, clinical notes and charting, care plans, billing, patient messaging, food logging, and nutrition tracking. That’s the clinical operating system.

What practices and digital health product teams typically build on top:

  • Custom patient onboarding flows matching their specific intake process
  • Condition-specific care programs combining functional labs with nutrition and behavioral health in one patient view
  • Lab result integration with external lab networks
  • Custom intake form logic beyond Healthie’s native form builder
  • Branded mobile experiences where patients see your product rather than Healthie’s interface

One example from our work: a care coordination startup combining behavioral health and nutrition coaching built a branded patient-facing app on Healthie Embedded in 11 weeks custom intake flows, care plan summaries, and wearable data integration, all in their own product UI. The Healthie infrastructure handled scheduling, telehealth, and billing; we built the product layer on top.

When Healthie needs to exchange data with external EHRs, labs, or payer systems, ConnectHealth provides the FHIR and HL7 v2 integration layer Epic patient history pulls, external lab orders, payer eligibility checks.

For complex data operations (bulk data migration from a prior EHR, multi-system integration, large-scale data processing), PHISecure adds the HIPAA-compliant data handling layer on top of Healthie’s baseline compliance.

Timeline: most Healthie-based custom builds run 60-90 days from scope to production MVP.

Choose the Platform That Matches Your Growth Plan

The best platform depends on what you are building. SimplePractice, Practice Better, Jane, Cerbo, and TherapyNotes each serve specific practice workflows well. Healthie stands apart when you need multi-specialty support, insurance billing, or the flexibility to build custom patient experiences through Healthie Embedded. For growing practices and digital health teams, the right decision is not just about today’s feature list. It is about choosing infrastructure that can support the workflows, integrations, and products you plan to build next.

Is Healthie better than SimplePractice?

Depends on the use case. SimplePractice is the simpler choice for solo behavioral health and therapy: clean UI, strong billing, large user community. Healthie wins when you run a multi-disciplinary practice (nutrition + mental health), need API access, or want a platform that scales beyond solo practice. For therapy-only solo: SimplePractice is genuinely easier. For growth and extensibility, Healthie has more headroom.

What is Healthie Embedded and who is it for?

Healthie Embedded is Healthie’s white-label, API-first developer layer. Digital health companies build their own patient-facing apps on Healthie’s clinical infrastructure — without building the EHR, billing, and telehealth from scratch. No other platform in this comparison offers an equivalent developer tier.

What does Healthie cost compared to competitors?

Approximate entry pricing (verify at publish): Healthie ~$99/mo, Practice Better ~$59/mo, SimplePractice ~$69/mo (Starter), Jane ~$79 CAD/mo, Cerbo ~$99/mo, TherapyNotes ~$49/mo. The $20-40/month differences rarely drive the decision — feature and API access gaps matter more. Full cost context: EHR software cost guide.

Can I build a custom patient portal on Healthie?

Yes. Healthie Embedded is specifically designed for this. Patients interact with your product, not Healthie’s interface. No other platform in this comparison supports white-label patient experiences.

Does Healthie support FHIR?

Healthie supports FHIR for data exchange, but Healthie Embedded primarily uses GraphQL rather than a pure FHIR R4 REST implementation. For complex FHIR-based integrations (Epic, Cerner, payer systems, external labs), HealthConnect CoPilot provides the translation layer on top.
