30-40% Lower Cloud Costs and 33% Faster Queries After a Full Azure to AWS Migration

A US-based healthcare technology company was spending over $30,000 a month on Azure while latency and scaling limits slowed its EHR, telemedicine, and revenue cycle platform. Mindbowser led a phased migration to AWS under the AWS Migration Acceleration Program, moving 180 production databases and 30TB of data without disrupting HIPAA-regulated operations.

Customer Focus

A US-based healthcare technology company providing EHR, practice management, telemedicine, revenue cycle management, and patient engagement tools for medical practices

Scope

Full infrastructure migration from Microsoft Azure to AWS under the AWS Migration Acceleration Program (MAP)

Stack

AWS RDS, EC2, EKS, MGN, CloudWatch, S3, Snowball, DataSync

Status

Delivered

Outcomes

Lower Costs, Faster Queries, Full Control

Results measured after the migration to AWS, benchmarked against the prior Azure environment.

30-40%

Reduction in cloud infrastructure costs through Reserved Instances, EC2 Spot for batch processing, and S3 Intelligent-Tiering

33%

Drop in database query latency, from 120ms on Azure to under 80ms on AWS Aurora

~180

Production databases migrated to AWS RDS with read replicas and KMS encryption

~30TB

Patient and operational data moved using AWS Snowball and DataSync

The Problem

Azure Costs and Performance Limits Were Blocking Growth

Before the migration, infrastructure decisions were constrained by cost, latency, and scale.

01
High Operational Costs

Cloud spend exceeded $30,000 a month, straining budgets and limiting capacity for innovation.

02
Performance Bottlenecks

Latency and integration issues between databases and virtual machines impeded service delivery.

03
Scalability Constraints

The legacy Azure architecture lacked the flexibility to support growing user demand and the company's growth trajectory.

The Tech Stack

What We Built

A Phased Migration Under the AWS Well-Architected Framework

A phased roadmap aligned to the AWS Well-Architected Framework

Mindbowser built a detailed migration roadmap for cost efficiency, performance, and scalability, executed under AWS MAP for architecture review, credits, and tooling support.

  • Assessed the existing Azure setup to identify dependencies, risk points, and optimization opportunities
  • Migrated approximately 180 production databases to AWS RDS with read replicas and KMS encryption
  • Used AWS MGN to migrate Azure VMs to EC2 M6i and C6i instances with auto scaling
  • Transferred approximately 30TB of patient and operational data using AWS Snowball for bulk transfer and DataSync for incremental sync
  • Established AWS EKS clusters for containerized application management
  • Deployed AWS CloudWatch and the ELK Stack for real time monitoring and logging
