NCPDP Integration

Implement NCPDP SCRIPT and Telecom Standards in Your Healthcare App

Every healthcare app that touches prescriptions, pharmacy claims, or medication history runs through NCPDP.
The NCPDP SCRIPT standard drives every new prescription, refill, cancellation, and medication history exchange between your app and a pharmacy or prescriber system.
NCPDP Telecom handles pharmacy claim transactions to payers and PBMs.
ConnectHealth implements both so your team ships the workflow, not the parser.

#Three NCPDP Standards Your Integration Needs to Know#

#National Council for Prescription Drug Programs# publishes the messaging standards that underpin e-prescribing and pharmacy transactions across the US. Three matter for healthcare app integrations:

NCPDP SCRIPT

The e-prescribing messaging standard. NewRx, RxChange, RxCancel, RxRenewal, and medication history requests all flow through SCRIPT. This is the protocol Surescripts uses across its 60,000+ pharmacy network.

NCPDP Telecom

The standard for real-time pharmacy billing and claims. When a pharmacy adjudicates a claim at the point of dispensing, Telecom is the protocol running underneath.

NCPDP Provider ID

The 7-digit identifier assigned to each pharmacy in the network. Prescriber workflows need accurate NCPDP number routing to reach the correct dispensing location.

How ConnectHealth Implements NCPDP SCRIPT
ConnectHealth provides a pre-built NCPDP SCRIPT connector between your application and the Surescripts network. Your team sends a structured request; ConnectHealth handles message formatting, version negotiation, routing, and acknowledgement handling.
Message types supported
NewRx
— send new prescriptions to pharmacy
RxChange
— prescriber response to pharmacy change request
RxCancel
— cancel an active prescription
RxRenewal
— handle renewal requests from pharmacy
MedHistoryRequest / MedHistoryResponse
— pull patient medication history from the Surescripts network
NCPDP SCRIPT version handling
SCRIPT 2017071
SCRIPT 10.6
ConnectHealth supports SCRIPT 2017071 for current Surescripts requirements and SCRIPT 10.6 for backward compatibility with legacy pharmacy systems. Version negotiation is handled at the connector level, so your app does not need separate code paths per version.
Surescripts routing
NCPDP SCRIPT messages route through Surescripts to reach pharmacies. ConnectHealth manages that Surescripts layer, so your team builds to one interface instead of independently integrating Surescripts and NCPDP SCRIPT on top.

What the NCPDP SCRIPT Standard Requires

The NCPDP SCRIPT standard defines message format, transaction types, and acknowledgement behavior for electronic prescription exchange. Surescripts mandates SCRIPT compliance for any app connecting to its network which means most e-prescribing use cases require SCRIPT implementation before a single prescription can be sent. Key compliance requirements:

#Version currency:#

Surescripts requires SCRIPT 2017071 for most transaction types. Legacy 10.6 support is needed for backward compatibility with older pharmacy systems.

#Transaction handling:#

SCRIPT messages are synchronous or asynchronous depending on type. NewRx and RxCancel are typically acknowledgement-based; MedHistory is request-response.

#Error and ACK handling:#

Every SCRIPT message requires a proper Status or Error response. Apps that don't handle acknowledgements correctly fail certification.

#EPCS compliance:#

Electronic Prescribing for Controlled Substances adds identity-verification requirements on top of SCRIPT separate from the message format itself.

How Provider and Pharmacy Identification Works

Every pharmacy connected to the Surescripts network has a 7-digit NCPDP provider ID. This number identifies the dispensing location when a prescription message is routed a NewRx sent without a valid NCPDP number doesn't reach the right pharmacy. In practice, this creates two integration problems:

NPI-to-NCPDP mapping:

Prescribers have NPI numbers; pharmacies have NCPDP IDs. When a patient selects a pharmacy, your app needs to resolve that pharmacy's NCPDP number to route the prescription correctly. ConnectHealth handles this lookup at message-send time your app passes pharmacy identifiers in the format it already uses, and the connector resolves to NCPDP before transmission.

Pharmacy directory lookup:

If your app lets patients pick a preferred pharmacy, it needs access to an NCPDP-indexed pharmacy directory. ConnectHealth's Surescripts integration includes pharmacy directory access your team doesn't need to build its own lookup against NCPDP's directory.

Frequently Asked Questions

NCPDP (National Council for Prescription Drug Programs) is the standards body that publishes messaging protocols for e-prescribing and pharmacy billing in the US. The most widely used standard is NCPDP SCRIPT, which powers electronic prescription exchange across the Surescripts network.

National Council for Prescription Drug Programs the non-profit, ANSI-accredited organization that maintains e-prescribing and pharmacy claims standards used across the US healthcare system.

NCPDP is the standards body it publishes the SCRIPT message format. Surescripts is the network it runs the e-prescribing infrastructure connecting prescribers, pharmacies, and PBMs. Surescripts uses NCPDP SCRIPT as its underlying message protocol. In practice, integrating with Surescripts means implementing NCPDP SCRIPT; you can't separate the two.

ConnectHealth supports SCRIPT 2017071 (current Surescripts requirement) and SCRIPT 10.6 for backward compatibility with pharmacy systems that haven't migrated to the current version.

An NCPDP number is the 7-digit identifier assigned to each pharmacy in the Surescripts network. Prescriptions need a valid NCPDP number to route to the correct dispensing location. ConnectHealth resolves NCPDP numbers at message-send time — your app doesn't need to run its own directory lookup.
