Mapbox is an American provider of custom online maps based on open-source maps and libraries like OpenStreetMap(default map solution), the MBTiles specification, Leaflet JavaScript library, and the CartoCSS map styling language and parser etc. MapBox provides maps, navigation solutions, data visualization etc. It is an all-in-one solution for map-based problems.
Mapbox is a location data platform that powers the maps and location services used in many popular apps like Snapchat, Facebook, four square, Mongo DB etc.
Mapbox gives official documentation to get started with Mapbox in react (#3).
There are also many wrappers packages of Mapbox for react for some advance usages some of them are as follows:
In this blog, we will use React Map GL. This library is developed by Uber and probably has more functionality than most projects would ever require.
npm install react-map-gl or yarn add react-map-gl
The current Mapbox-gl release requires its stylesheet to be included at all times. The marker, popup and navigation components in react-map-gl also need the stylesheet to work properly.
You may add the stylesheet to the head of your page:
<link href='https://api.tiles.mapbox.com/mapbox-gl-js/v<YOUR_MAPBOX_VERSION>/mapbox-gl.css' rel='stylesheet' />
Find out your Mapbox version by running yarn list Mapbox-gl or npm ls Mapbox-gl.
Or embed it in your app by using – browserify-css with Browserify or – css-loader with Webpack:
// app.js import 'mapbox-gl/dist/mapbox-gl.css';
import { useState } from "react"; import ReactMapGL from "react-map-gl"; //MapBox Default Styles const MapboxStreets = "mapbox://styles/mapbox/streets-v11"; const MapboxOutDoor = "mapbox://styles/mapbox/outdoors-v11"; const MapboxLight = "mapbox://styles/mapbox/light-v10"; const MapboxDark = "mapbox://styles/mapbox/dark-v10"; const MapboxSatellite = "mapbox://styles/mapbox/satellite-v9"; const MapboxSatelliteStreet = "mapbox://styles/mapbox/satellite-streets-v11"; const MapboxNavigationDay = "mapbox://styles/mapbox/navigation-day-v1"; const MapboxNavigationNight = "mapbox://styles/mapbox/navigation-night-v1"; //MapBox Custom styles const Custom1 = "mapbox://styles/examples/cke97f49z5rlg19l310b7uu7j"; const Custom2 = "mapbox://styles/surajfc/ckq0jexlc0h4418k00g3y1ora/draft"; const StarterMap = ({ token }) => { const [viewport, setViewport] = useState({ width: "100vw", height: "100vh", latitude: 18.5204, longitude: 73.8567, zoom: 8, }); return ( <ReactMapGL {...viewport} mapboxApiAccessToken={token} onViewportChange={nextViewport => setViewport(nextViewport)} mapStyle={Custom1} /> ); }; export default StarterMap;
For more mapStyle pls refer here
we can also create custom map styles using Mapbox studio
*Adding a Navigation Control
import * as React from 'react'; import ReactMapGL, { NavigationControl } from "react-map-gl"; const MAPBOX_TOKEN = ''; // Set your mapbox token here const Map = () => { const [viewport, setViewport] = React.useState({ latitude: 37.7577, longitude: -122.4376, zoom: 8 }); const navControlStyle = { right: 10, bottom: 10, }; return ( <ReactMapGL {...viewport} width="100vw" height="100vh" onViewportChange={setViewport} mapboxApiAccessToken={MAPBOX_TOKEN} mapStyle="mapbox://styles/mapbox/dark-v9" > <NavigationControl style={navControlStyle} showCompass={true} showZoom={true} /> </ReactMapGL> ); }![]()
We can see a navigation control with a zoom option at the bottom right.
*Get user Geolocation with FullScreen
import React, { useState } from "react"; import ReactMapGL, { FullscreenControl, GeolocateControl, FlyToInterpolator, } from "react-map-gl"; //button position for going to user current location const geolocateControlStyle = { left: 10, top: 10, }; //btn Posiiton of full screen toggle const fullscreenControlStyle = { right: 10, top: 10, }; const GeoLocateMap = ({ token }) => { const [viewport, setViewport] = useState({ width: "100vw", height: "100vh", latitude: 18.5204, longitude: 73.8567, zoom: 8, }); return ( <div> <ReactMapGL {...viewport} mapboxApiAccessToken={token} onViewportChange={nextViewport => setViewport(nextViewport)} transitionDuration={2000} transitionInterpolator={new FlyToInterpolator()} > <FullscreenControl style={fullscreenControlStyle} /> <GeolocateControl style={geolocateControlStyle} positionOptions={{ enableHighAccuracy: true }} trackUserLocation={true} auto={false} /> </ReactMapGL> </div> ); }; export default GeoLocateMap;![]()
*Map with Custom Marker
import React, { useState } from "react"; import ReactMapGL, { Marker } from "react-map-gl"; import Location from "../location.png"; const MarkerMap = ({ token }) => { const [viewport, setViewport] = useState({ width: "100vw", height: "100vh", latitude: 18.5204, longitude: 73.8567, zoom: 8, }); return ( <div> <ReactMapGL {...viewport} mapboxApiAccessToken={token} onViewportChange={nextViewport => setViewport(nextViewport)} > <Marker latitude={18.5081359} longitude={73.79993} offsetLeft={-20} offsetTop={-10} > <img src={Location} alt="pin" height="40px" width="30px" /> <p>MindBowser</p> </Marker> </ReactMapGL> </div> ); }; export default MarkerMap;![]()
