Introduction To MapBox With React

Mapbox is an American provider of custom online maps based on open-source maps and libraries like OpenStreetMap(default map solution), the MBTiles specification, Leaflet JavaScript library, and the CartoCSS map styling language and parser etc. MapBox provides maps, navigation solutions, data visualization etc. It is an all-in-one solution for map-based problems.

Mapbox is a  location data platform that powers the maps and location services used in many popular apps like Snapchat, Facebook, four square, Mongo DB etc.

Mapbox React Integration

Mapbox gives official documentation to get started with Mapbox in react (#3).

There are also many wrappers packages of Mapbox for react for some advance usages some of them are as follows:

  1. React Mapbox GL (react-mapbox-gl).
  2. React Map GL (react-map-gl).

In this blog, we will use React Map GL. This library is developed by Uber and probably has more functionality than most projects would ever require. 

*Installation

Using react-map-gl requires react >= 16.3.

npm install react-map-gl  or yarn add react-map-gl

Styling:

The current Mapbox-gl release requires its stylesheet to be included at all times. The marker, popup and navigation components in react-map-gl also need the stylesheet to work properly.

You may add the stylesheet to the head of your page:

<link href='https://api.tiles.mapbox.com/mapbox-gl-js/v<YOUR_MAPBOX_VERSION>/mapbox-gl.css' rel='stylesheet' />

Find out your Mapbox version by running yarn list Mapbox-gl or npm ls Mapbox-gl.

Or embed it in your app by using – browserify-css with Browserify or – css-loader with Webpack:
